چکیده

Key establishment in sensor networks is a challenging problem because asymmetric key cryptosystems are unsuitable for use in resource constrained sensor nodes, and also because the nodes could be physically compromised by an adversary. We present three new mechanisms for key establishment using the framework of pre-distributing a random set of keys to each node. First, in the q-composite keys scheme, we trade off the unlikeliness of a large-scale network attack in order to significantly strengthen random key predistribution’s strength against smaller-scale attacks. Second, in the multipath-reinforcement scheme, we show how to strengthen the security between any two nodes by leveraging the security of other links. Finally, we present the random-pairwise keys scheme, which perfectly preserves the secrecy of the rest of the network when any node is captured, and also enables node-to-node authentication and quorum-based revocation. 1We gratefully acknowledge funding support for this research. Random Key Pre-Distribution Techniques against Sybil Attacks

Sybil attacks pose a serious threat for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) security. They can create problems in routing, voting schemes, decision making, distributed storage and sensor re-programming. In a Sybil attack, the attacker masquerades as multiple sensor identities that are actually controlled by one or a few existing attacker nodes. Sybil identities are fabricated out of stolen keys, obt...

Two Improvements of Random Key Predistribution for Wireless Sensor Networks

Key distribution is of a critical importance to security of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Random key predistribution is an acknowledged approach to the key distribution problem. In this paper, we propose and analyze two novel improvements that enhance security provided by the random key predistribution schemes. The first improvement exploits limited length collisions in secure hash functions...

A Generalised Formula for Calculating the Resilience of Random Key Predistribution Schemes

A commonly used metric for comparing the resilience of key predistribution schemes is fails, which measures the proportion of network connections which are ‘broken’ by an adversary which has compromised s nodes. In ‘Random key predistribution schemes for sensor networks’, Chan, Perrig and Song present a formula for measuring the resilience in a class of random key predistribution schemes called...

Evaluation of Key Management Schemes in Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks are being deployed in wide variety of applications, including military sensing and tracking, environment monitoring, patient monitoring and tracking, smart environments, etc. When a wireless sensor network is deployed in such hostile environment, security becomes an extremely important issue. Confidentiality, integrity, and availability are typical security goals for wi...

Key Predistribution Schemes for Sensor Networks for Continuous Deployment Scenario

In sensor networks, secure communication among sensor nodes requires secure links and consequently secure key establishment. Due to resource constraints, achieving such key establishment is non-trivial. Recently some random key predistribution techniques have been proposed to establish pairwise keys. Some of these approaches assume certain deployment knowledge is available prior to deployment a...
